چکیده

This article reviews our knowledge of crustacean vitellogenin and its role in vitellogenesis. Besides the biochemical and immunological aspects, particular attention has been given to hormonal control of the synthesis of this yolk precursor. Some examples from insects, amphibians and birds are compared.

Crustacean Vitellogenesis: Its Role in Oocyte Development1

SYNOPSIS. One of the major changes that occurs during the maturation of oocytes is the accumulation of yolk protein, or vitellin (Vn). To better understand how this process is regulated, we characterized the Vn of the ridgeback shrimp, Sicyonia ingentis (Penaeoidea). This Vn is a 322 kDa molecule composed of three subunits. Using purified Vn, we developed an anti-Vn antiserum and used it to cha...

Vitellogenin assay by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) as a biomarker of endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs) pollution

There are increasing evidences that show many xenobiotic chemicals (called as endocrine disruptorchemicals EDCs) through interfering with endocrine system, have the capability to induce developmentaland reproductive abnormalities in humans and animals. The yolk protein precursor vitellogenin (VTG) hasproved to be a simple and sensitive biomarker for assessing exposure of fish to EDCs especially...

Structural characterization of the N-glycan moiety and site of glycosylation in vitellogenin from the decapod crustacean Cherax quadricarinatus.

Glycosylation is of importance for the structure and function of proteins. In the case of vitellin (Vt), a ubiquitous protein accumulated into granules as the main yolk protein constituent of oocytes during oogenesis, glycosylation could be of importantance for the folding, processing and transport of the protein to the yolk and also provides a source of carbohydrate during embryogenesis. Vt fr...

Vitellogenin Gene Expression and Sex Steroid Levels as Biomarkers in Yellowfin Seabream (Acanthopagrus latus) Exposed to Bisphenol-A

Background: The egg yolk precursor protein vitellogenin (VTG) has proven to be a useful biomarker, used to identify organisms exposed to estrogenic compounds. Methods: We investigated variations in the VTG gene expression pattern and plasma sex steroid hormones concentrations in the yellowfin Seabream, Acanthopagrus latus, (A. latus) by various doses of bisphenol-A (BPA) exposure for 7 and 14 ...

Analysis of vitellogenin gene structure in Caspian roach, Rutilus caspicus (Pisces: Cyprinidae) during exposure to Atrazine

Chemical contamination of aquatic environments to EDCs has become a major focus of environmental toxicology research. The exposure of fishes to estrogenic EDCs in aquatic environments is most frequently assessed by analyzing Vitellogenin (Vg) (the egg yolk precursor protein) expression. Therefore, characterization of Vg gene is of high priority for EDCs bio-monitoring. So, we prepared liver tis...
